Over-50 Fashion: Why Talk About It?
Just yesterday I was chatting with a client about the difference between beauty and charm. She told me she no longer felt comfortable with her appearance due to her advancing age, especially since she was particularly beautiful when she was younger. I reassured her that beauty fades, but charm remains, and what matters in a dress is the woman who wears it.
Aging is inexorable, there's really nothing you can do about it, but what really worries me most, at least in my life experience, is not being able to appreciate the beauty in me, no matter how old I am. Let me explain: certainly in my twenties, or even thirties, my skin was smoother, I didn't have a single wrinkle (I was very lucky!!). Today, as I enter my forties, I see a few small lines on my face, but this doesn't make me unhappy at all. I'm convinced, in fact, that there's a big difference between beauty and charm, and between the two, if I can choose, I'll choose charm!!
At this age, we are more aware of ourselves and our bodies, and we know our strengths and weaknesses. Life experience grants us the luxury of a truly personal style; our outfits reveal who we are, our life choices, our experiences, and the travels we've taken. Experimentation, at least when it comes to our wardrobe, is fun but also moderation. Fortunately, I can say, the excesses of our youth are no longer part of us. Our excesses, the clothes we wear that may be a little out of line, are worn for a good reason: a romantic dinner or a simple, fun fling.
Awareness, then, is the source and core of allure. This is my belief, and it's from this perspective that I started when I created my Over 50 Collection, dedicated to those women who know exactly what they want.
The answer to the question that inspired this short post—whether it makes sense to talk about a fashion style for mature women—is definitely yes. Let's talk about it often and at length. I intend to return to the topic in this blog dedicated to Questions of Style.
