Why wear a shrug over an elegant dress?

If the answer is "yes, but..." then I start thinking about how to better personalize my outfit.

If my focus is more on the color of the dress, or on the neckline that's perhaps a little too low for the occasion, then a well-chosen shawl in both style and color is right for me.

If the dress I've chosen is already a bright color, like red, fuchsia, or grass green, then my shrug will be a more serene and minimal shade, like nude, dove gray, or pearl gray.

If, on the other hand, my dress isn't extremely bright in color, but is more subdued, sober, and elegant, then my shrug could have a melange shade, a lurex thread that illuminates it like a silver thread and makes it more glamorous.
